Minister for Education and Training, the Hon Christopher Pyne MP, today announced the membership of the Coordinating Council for International Education. The Coordinating Council will be responsible for finalising Australia’s first ever National Strategy for International Education. The Council will comprise six Australian Government ministers and assistant ministers with responsibility for policies and programmes that support international education and six key education and industry experts. Sue Blundell, English Australia’s Executive Director, has been appointed as one of these six experts. |

As the national peak body for the ELICOS sector in Australia, English Australia plays a strong leadership role in supporting the sector in engaging with best practice across a range of relevant areas. The Guide to Best Practice in Managing Professional Development in ELICOS showcases up-to-the-minute key features of successful continuing professional development programs that help to maximise staff engagement and buy-in. It also provides detailed case studies and examples from member colleges who have implemented innovative professional development frameworks, facilitating the sharing of industry expertise and inspiring the uptake of new ideas. |

This week English Australia hosts its annual national conference for the English language sector of international education, demonstrating why the industry in Australia is a global leader in the approach it takes to driving professional sharing and growth. The 27th annual English Australia Conference will be held in Melbourne from 17 – 19 September 2014 and is designed to provide a wide range of professional development and networking opportunities for over 350 delegates who work in or are associated with the English language sector. The 2014 conference has a theme of ‘Quality: walking the talk’ and will explore the concept and practice of ‘quality’, from management to marketing, from curriculum to classroom practice, from student support to student success. |

Pleasing as this growth is, it would be more sustainable if spread more evenly across all types of programs/providers within the sector; stand-alone ELICOS as well as those providing pathways to higher education. |

English Australia, the association representing the leading English language colleges in Australia, and the Italian Association of Language Consultants and Agents, IALCA, are pleased to announce that they have concluded an important collaboration agreement. Growth of 60% over the last two years in the number of Italians going to Australia to study English has seen Italy become the #1 source of students from Europe and the #8 source of students across all nationalities for Australia. The signing ceremony was hosted by the Australian Ambassador David Ritchie AO, who used the opportunity to emphasise the valuable contribution that educational and language exchange makes to the relationship between the two countries. |

The Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC) will slug temporary visitors to Australia with an additional $700 Subsequent Temporary Application Charge for those wishing to stay onshore as a short term tourist post completion of study or to extend their study opportunities. ATEC’s Deputy Chair, Peter Ovenden, and English Australia’s Executive Director, Sue Blundell, call on the government to revisit this charge. |

English Australia conducted an Agent Survey at the end of 2012 to measure agent awareness and understanding of English Australia. The survey closed in Janaury 2013 with over 700 agents from 72 countries completing the survey. The results indicate English Australia is well recognised but there is work to be done to improve agent understanding of the support English Australia can provide. We thank those agents who completed our survey. |

In November/December 2012 English Australia hosted a familiarisation visit to Australia for members of IALCA, the Italian Association of Language Consultants and Agents. Seven IALCA agents were joined by three journalists for a whirlwind 11 day tour around Australia. |

The 25th annual English Australia Conference will be held in Sydney from 19 – 21 September 2012 and is designed to provide a wide range of professional development and networking opportunities for more than 350 people working in or associated with the ELICOS sector of international education. Executive Director, Sue Blundell, said that she was expecting delegates to respond positively to a strong program that focused on supporting them in meeting current challenges. “The industry has been through some tough times recently and it is important that we come together to focus on positioning ourselves as a professional industry that delivers excellent English language outcomes to our students from all over the world” she commented. |

English Australia is delighted to launch a new publication that reveals the latest findings regarding the international student experience in the English language sector. Almost 9,000 students from 49 English language colleges across Australia shared their views on their experience in a wide-ranging online survey undertaken at the end of 2011. The results from the ELT Barometer were overwhelmingly positive and showed high levels of satisfaction on almost all aspects of their experience, from pre-arrival, through learning and living to student support. Furthermore the 2011 results show significant improvement from a similar survey undertaken in 2009. The English language sector performs well in comparison with the international student response from the university sector in Australia on almost all indicators. |

The inaugural Chair of English Australia, Christine Bundesen, received an Award in the Order of Australia in the Queen's Birthday Honours List released today. The current Chair of English Australia, Chris Wallis, congratulated Ms Bundesen on behalf of the Association's member colleges and everyone in the English language training community. “The award is wonderful news and much-appreciated recognition of our sector of international education, an important contributor to education and cultural exchange between Australia and the rest of the world. “Christine Bundesen was one of the prime movers in the establishment and development of the Australian international education for overseas students industry which has grown in just 25 years to become one of the nation's largest exports. “She has been both a pioneer and an exceptional leader of the English language training sector and international education as a whole both nationally and globally” Ms Wallis said. |
