AEI releases YTD July 2014 statistics

AEI has released the data for commencements of student visa holders at YTD July 2014.

YTD July 2014 figures continue to show all sectors experiencing growth in the number of commencements, with a resulting overall growth across all sectors of +19%.

The Higher Education and Non-Award (foundation studies & study abroad) sectors have both recorded their best ever numbers of commencements for this YTD July period.

The strong growth trend for ELICOS that was experienced in 2013 continued in the first half of 2014 with figures for the first 6 months to June showing overall growth of +28%, matching the growth of +27% experienced in the second half of 2013.

The month of July, however, was the first month to show a decline in ELICOS commencements since August 2012, dragging the YTD figure back to +21%, producing a total of 61,111 commencements.  The -8% decline in July is somewhat explained by July 2014 having only 4 Monday start dates compared with 5 in July 2013 and also by a significant decline for Brazil in comparison with July 2013 when extraordinary numbers of SwB students commenced ELICOS courses.

The YTD growth represents 10,701 more commencing students than YTD 2013 and represents the best ELICOS performance of any year except the peak year of 2009.

YTD 2014 figures show all of the top 10 countries showing growth except South Korea, with one country, India, showing triple digit growth.

4 of the top 10 countries have experienced their best ELICOS YTD commencement figures ever: Thailand, Vietnam, Colombia and Taiwan.

India (+2,886), China (+2,119), Thailand (+1,691) and Vietnam (+1,029) have contributed the largest numbers of additional ELICOS students.

Three regions have recorded their highest level of ELICOS YTD commencement figures ever: Americas, South East Asia and Southern & Eastern Europe.
