The report highlighted a key issue for the ELICOS sector - calling for a review of the Genuine Temporary Entrant test.  Click here to read an excellent article on the issue from The Australian entitled "Call to rethink student visa test".

The Council was asked to provide advice to the government that would contribute to the development of a five-year national strategy to support the sustainability and quality of international education.

As the only sector that delivers programs solely to international students, the ELICOS sector obviously has a keen interest in what Chaney has to say.

English Australia welcomes the focus of the 35 recommendations which address seven key issues identified as crucial to a sustainable future for international education:

- coordination across the sector;

- a quality education;

- positive student experience;

- partnerships;

- the student visa program;

- data analysis and research in international education; and

- competition, promotion and marketing.

In his media release, Minister Bowen said the Government welcomed the recommendations and would establish a Ministerial Coordinating Council on International Education to oversee implementation over the next five years. The MCCIE's top priority will be the development of a five-year strategy to ensure the sustainability and quality of Australia's international education sector.

The report expects Australia to be hosting an additional 117,000 international students by 2020 – a 30 per cent increase on current enrolments.

English Australia’s Executive Director will join the following industry representatives in providing an initial response to the report at the AEI Policy Briefing in Canberra on Friday 1 March.

- Professor Margaret Gardner AO, Vice-Chancellor and President, RMIT University

- Helen Zimmerman, President, International Education Association of Australia (IEAA)
