AEI releases February 2013 statistics

AEI has released the PRISMS statistics for YTD February 2013. The data shows that the ELICOS sector has now seen six consecutive months of growth – with this growth experienced across a diverse range of markets.

[The February data for higher education should be interpreted with caution. In 2012, 36 universities started their first semester in February, while in 2013 only 22 universities started in February. A comprehensive picture of first semester 2013 for higher education is not expected until the release of March data.]

At YTD 2013 all sectors except ELICOS and Schools show a decline in the number of commencements, with a resulting overall decline across all sectors of -10.5%.

The ELICOS sector shows a continuation of the return to growth that commenced in September 2012 with YTD February figures showing growth of +5.9%, producing a total of 15,324 commencements. This growth represents 856 more commencing students than YTD 2012.

In both 2010 and 2011 all of the top 10 countries experienced declining numbers. 2012 figures showed declines from only 4 countries in the top 10: China, South Korea, Brazil and Saudi Arabia. These four countries continue to decline in the first 2 months of 2013.

Vietnam showed the strongest growth of any country (students) with an additional 459 students, with Colombia closely following with an additional 351 students and overtaking Brazil and South Korea to become the 2nd most important source country for student visa holders.

Italy is included in the top 10 for the first time at the expense of Taiwan.
