I am excited to let you know that English Australia will soon launch the Register of English Language Teachers Australia (RELTA). The RELTA is a new strategic initiative designed to support our teaching community to manage and record their professional development online, and access up-to-date sector information. As part of our new website, the RELTA directly connects with English Australia’s Continuing Professional Development (CPD) framework so that teachers can maintain their CPD portfolio in one place.

Please stay tuned for the formal launch email with even more details on the features of our new site.

Our member colleges achieve significant milestones

Last week I had the pleasure of attending the 30th Anniversary dinner for UOW College. The dinner celebrated the many achievements of the college and recognised the significant impact it has had over this period. UOW college has been a member of English Australia for 29 years, an association we are very proud of. We also attended Access Language Centre’s and Sydney College of English’s commemorative event this month. A a founding member of English Australia it was great to hear some of the exciting plans these two colleges are making for the road ahead. Thank you for the invitation.

Thank you for your amazing participation in our Annual ELICOS survey

A record 210 institutions completed this year’s Annual ELICOS survey. This record participation and the new data related to provider segments (standalone, VET-Based, University-Based) will provide unique market intelligence. The data is currently being collated but the team at StudentMarketing and all participating institutions will be invited to the annual presentation again this year.

Upcoming member forums and market performance roadshows

Please mark these dates on your calendar for the annual member forum and market performance roadshow. We will distribute further details shortly:

  • Adelaide - Tuesday 3 July
  • Melbourne - Wednesday 4 July
  • Sydney - Thursday 5 July
  • Perth - Tuesday 10 July
  • Brisbane - Thursday 12 July
  • Canberra - Thursday 19 July

The outcomes of this years survey of all ELICOS students will be even more valuable given the YTD ELICOS performance shows signs of softening in 2018. As we previously reported, the sector slowed considerably in the 2nd half of 2017. In 2018, the market declined 2.8% in January and 1.1% in February compared to last year. This is a concerning trend and will flow into total enrolments in the coming months and other sectors by mid-year. We will distribute the detailed February 2018 Market report shortly.

A bumpy road for ELICOS ahead?

A number of members have raised concerns with me related to visa processing for ELICOS applicants from Japan, Brazil, Thailand, and Vietnam. I will be taking these matters up with the Department of Home Affairs whilst attending the Education Visa Consultative Committee (EVCC) in Canberra next week. It is critical that Australia’s reputation is not damaged in these important ELICOS markets.
