Japanese university seeks ELICOS and school visit program for trainee teachers

A private Japanese university is seeking expressions of interest from Australian education institutions for a four-week ELICOS program, including a customised school visit program, for undergraduate trainee elementary school teachers.

Proposed programs should focus on helping the trainee teachers gain communicative English skills and an international perspective by visiting Australian primary schools. Opportunities to observe primary school classes from years one to six (particularly ESL classes), and interact with Australian school children and teaching staff will be an advantage.

Program participants will likely have minimal English language ability and will teach across different subject areas once they graduate. Visit program requirements include:

  • timing – a four-week period between 1 February and 22 March 2019
  • estimated group size – 10 participants
  • estimated English level – 3.5-4.0 IELTS
  • accommodation – homestay (single-placement)
  • the Japanese university prefers open classes for the ELICOS component of the program, preferably with mixed nationalities in the class. The school visit program should be customised.

Proposals should include:

  1. fees for the ELICOS program
  2. fees for the school visit program
  3. fees for arranging accommodation
  4. airport pick-up and drop-off
  5. incidental allowances for activities such as farewell dinners and other non-essential inclusions
  6. a one-week sample program.

Providing information on specific activities the host primary school can arrange will be an advantage. Such activates may include teacher shadowing and opportunities to teach classes.

While not a requirement, the university would appreciate opportunities for their students to audit one education-related lecture offered by the host institution.

For further information or to submit an expression of interest (five-page maximum in Word) contact Moe Umehara, Education Manager, Austrade Japan. Submissions are due 4 May 2018.
