CEO Update: March 2018

CEO picture

Over the past month, I’ve consulted on behalf of Austrade with many members to develop Market Action Plans for Indonesia and Vietnam. Everyone involved has contributed critical insights into these markets. With English Australia and International Education Association of Australia (IEAA) leading the industry consultation, Austrade aims to release the two plans in the coming months. These plans aim to provide a clear framework on how best to engage these countries, which should lead to many more successful opportunities in these important markets.

Meeting with members

I’ve also used this time to hold Branch meetings in most states and hear from you about what’s impacting on your college and see what English Australia can do to help. Thank you to everyone who has come along to these meetings and I look forward to meeting with many more of you shortly.

Understanding market trends

You may have seen our recent commentary on the December 2017 ELICOS student visa performance (Read the StudyTravel or the PIE article). While the end of year 2017 data shows an overall increase in commencements of 2.9%, this somewhat masks the consecutive decline of flat performance over the last 5 months of the year. The lag in reportable commencement data for 2018 means we cannot analyse the impact of these declines more broadly for another couple of months. I will continue to lobby our colleagues at the Department of Home Affairs for better data on ELICOS lodgements and grants as all our students on packaged visas are hidden in the data for other sectors. However, I can see that immigration data for January 2018 (not publicly released) shows continued growth in lodgements and grants from China for most sectors. This is positive given China’s contribution to market share.

Attending regulatory meetings

English Australia is meeting with ASQA, TEQSA and Department of Education and Training later this week as part of our quarterly Regulator-Provider Forum for ELICOS/CRICOS related issues. The implementation of ELICOS Standards 2018 is at the top of the list of items for discussion. As always, I would be happy to hear from you about any regulatory matters that you would like raised or need support on.

Engaging the wider region

This weekend, I will attend the ASEAN-Australia Business Summit CEO Forum. Hosted by our Prime Minister and joined by the leaders of the 10 ASEAN countries, the summit supports Australian and ASEAN businesses with the know-how and connections to strengthen our economic partnerships. I will join around 100 senior representatives of leading Southeast Asian and Australian companies as we contribute to six round tables. By participating in this forum and supporting the upcoming ASEAN Australia Education Dialogue in Penang next week, we ensure that the Australian English Language Teaching sector is at the forefront of the ASEAN region.
