AEI releases June 2013 statistics

AEI has released the latest international student data for YTD June 2013.

At YTD June 2013 all sectors except VET show growth in the number of commencements, with a resulting overall growth across all sectors of +3.4% – the first growth in commencements over this period since 2009.

This compares with the average YTD June growth rate for commencements of +5.0% per year in the preceding ten years.

The ELICOS sector shows a strengthening of the return to growth that commenced in September 2012 with YTD June figures showing growth of +14.2%, producing a total of 41,056 commencements. This growth represents 5,102 more commencing students than YTD 2012 and is not only growth compared with YTD 2012, but also compared with YTD 2011.

The sector has now seen ten consecutive months of growth – with this growth experienced across a diverse range of markets. September 2012 numbers increased by +9% and this continued in October (+7%), November (+12%), December (+70%), January 2013 (+8%), February 2013 (+7%), March 2013 (+12%), April (+15%), May (+30%) and June (+24%).

In both 2010 and 2011 all of the top 10 countries experienced declining numbers. 2012 figures showed declines from only 4 countries in the top 10: China, South Korea, Brazil and Saudi Arabia. Only two of these countries continue to decline in the first 6 months of 2013 (Brazil and Saudi Arabia).

Vietnam (+1,258), China (+863), Colombia (+827) and Thailand (+737) have contributed the largest numbers of additional ELICOS students for YTD 2013.
