A National Symposium: English Language Competence of International Students

Following the landmark national symposium in 2007, IEAA and Australian Education International (AEI) are presenting a follow-up event Five Years On: English Language Competence of International Students.

The 2013 Symposium will draw on current research evidence – including three newly-commissioned papers – and consider the implications of recent developments, including:

- the establishment and emerging responsibilities of TEQSA and ASQA for the development of threshold standards, including English language standards;
- admissions / visa processing requirements; and
- continuing media interest and coverage about English language competence of international students.

The symposium will review progress, critically assess achievements and consider the research evidence to assist education institutions to make decisions about how best to enhance the English language competence and the learning outcomes of international students.

This event is sponsored by ACPET, Cambridge English, English Australia, ETS TOEFL, Navitas, IELTS and PTE Academic.

English Australia Executive Director, Sue Blundell, is a member of the Steering Committee for the event. Although attendance is by invitation only (to ensure a good cross-section of attendees across the different education sectors and other key stakeholders), English Australia and the ELICOS sector will be well represented, with approximately 30 participants from the Secretariat, Board and member colleges registered amongst the 130 attendees.
