AEI releases March 2012 statistics

AEI has released the March 2012 international student enrolment data.  All sectors, including Higher Education, show a decline in the number of commencements for YTD 2012, with a resulting overall decline across all sectors of -7.2%.

YTD 2012 shows a continuation of the decline for the ELICOS sector that started towards the end of 2009 and has continued since. ELICOS student visa commencements have declined by -5.6% for YTD 2012 to produce a total of 21,224 commencements. This decline represents 1,252 fewer commencing students than 2011. When compared with the peak year of 2009, the decline is -32%, representing 10,205 fewer commencing students.

Although the overall decline in ELICOS numbers has slowed, the significant and continuing decline from China, Australia’s #1 source country, is of particular concern. Also of concern is that whilst a few countries are showing growth, the numbers are small.
