NSW Police Launch New Social Media Pages

NSW police have launched two new social media sites in an effort to provide foreign students with crime prevention and safety messages.  At the University of New South Wales in Sydney, police on Wednesday unveiled their International Students Facebook and Weibo pages.
In 2012, 192,000 international students studied in NSW and the sites will make it easier for people to communicate with police, Superintendent Gavin Dengate said. He said the Weibo - the Chinese equivalent to Twitter - and Facebook pages "will aim to prepare students on how to be safe whilst in New South Wales." "(It will) reassure families that police will work with the students to assist them while they are here," he said in a statement.
Police said there were approximately 500,000 Weibo users in Australia, and the new method would improve communication between law enforcement agencies and the wider Chinese community. "We hope to use this site as a way of communicating with this large population, showing them how we go about our core business of crime prevention and how they can help make our great state as safe as possible," he said.
