AEI releases March 2013 statistics

AEI has released the latest international student data for YTD March 2013.

At YTD March 2013 all sectors except VET show growth in the number of commencements, with a resulting overall growth across all sectors of +3.2% – the first growth in commencements over this period since 2009.

The ELICOS sector shows a continuation of the return to growth that commenced in September 2012 with YTD March figures showing growth of +6.4%, producing a total of 22,544 commencements.  This growth represents 1,350 more commencing students than YTD 2012 and is not only growth compared with YTD 2012, but also compared with YTD 2011.

The sector has now seen seven consecutive months of growth – with this growth experienced across a diverse range of markets.

In both 2010 and 2011 all of the top 10 countries experienced declining numbers.  2012 figures showed declines from only 4 countries in the top 10:  China, South Korea, Brazil and Saudi Arabia.  These four countries continue to decline in the first 3 months of 2013.

Vietnam showed the strongest growth of any country (# of students) with an additional 677 students, with Colombia closely following with an additional 494 students and overtaking Brazil and South Korea to become the 2nd most important source country for student visa holders.
