AEI releases June 2012 statistics

AEI has released the June 2012 international student enrolment data. All sectors show a decline in the number of commencements for YTD 2012, with a resulting overall decline across all sectors of -8.0%.

YTD 2012 shows a continuation of the decline for the ELICOS sector that started towards the end of 2009 and has continued since. ELICOS student visa commencements have declined by -2.9% for YTD 2012 to produce a total of 36,018 commencements. This decline represents 1,091 fewer commencing students than 2011. When compared with the peak year of 2009, the sector shows a decline of -35%, representing 19,677 fewer commencing students.

Although April commencements gave some hope that the decline might have bottomed out, with growth of +29% in commencements for the month, this growth of 1,544 students was virtually cancelled out by the -26% decline in May commencements (-1,463 students). June showed a small return to growth (+2.7%), however is a month that usually experiences one of the lowest levels of commencements for the year so is not a significant indicator of trends.

YTD 2012 figures for ELICOS show declines from 6 countries in the top 10: China, Vietnam, South Korea, Saudi Arabia, Taiwan, Brazil; and growth from 4 countries: Spain, Colombia, Japan, Thailand. Spain is included in the top 10 for the first time.
