First month of 2015 continues the growth trend for ELICOS

The January 2015 statistics released last week by the Australian Government Department of Education and Training show the return to growth for ELICOS continuing and stabilising at a new high level.

[Note: The data referred to in this report only relates to student visa holders. In 2013, 38% of all ELICOS students came to Australia on another visa.  This data is captured in a separate annual report released in May/June each year which provides a more comprehensive view of trends for the sector.]

Whilst January 2015 figures show all sectors experiencing growth in the number of commencements (with a resulting overall growth across all sectors of +15%), this data should be interpreted with caution as most Higher Education and Vocational Education and Training (VET) commencements for first semester typically take place over a 3 month period across January, February and March.

The monthly data is, however, meaningful for ELICOS.  The level of growth for ELICOS that was experienced in the second half of 2014 (+9%) has continued into the first month of 2015 with growth of +7% (a total of 10,973 commencements compared with 10,221 for 2014). Whilst a lower level of growth than the second half of 2013 and the first half of 2014 (+27%), this is good growth and establishes a new peak for ELICOS commencements.

There are concerns that 4 of the top 10 countries show declining numbers (Colombia, Brazil, Vietnam and South Korea), a continuation of a trend for the latter 2 countries, however a new trend that will need monitoring for Colombia and Brazil.

It should also be noted, however, that whilst the top 10 countries together as a group show good growth of +6%, a much stronger level of growth (+12%) is being experienced from countries other than the top 10 – a positive development in terms of diversification of nationalities.
