DIAC releases 2011/2012 program year student visa data
DIAC has released the final quarterly report for student visa applications and grants for the 2011/2012 Program Year.
Although total visa applications (+0.4%) and total visa grants (+1%) for the full program year show only a small level of growth, with this growth distorted by the churn of students already onshore, there are some figures that could justify a level of cautious optimism looking forward.
- offshore visa applications for the full year were up +4%, with every quarter showing growth;
- offshore visa grants, although down by -0.8% for the full year, showed growth in three of the four quarters.
Still of concern, however, are numbers of Independent ELICOS visas, with offshore visa grants down by -6% and onshore grants also down by -0.4%.
Also of concern is the decline in offshore applications (-5%) and grants (-9%) from China, Australia’s largest source country.
And overall numbers remain in stark contrast to the peak year of 2008/2009, with offshore applications (-44%) and grants (-45%) both down significantly when compared with that year.

The data from DIAC is useful for:
a) understanding trends in the pipeline of students across all types of pathways;
b) understanding the pipeline of students by type of program eg. stand-alone English, English for High School, English for further study etc.; and
c) understanding trends in onshore vs offshore student visa applications and grants.
