Staff at English Australia member colleges may be interested in a project launched this week by the Council of International Students Australia (CISA). The project, entitled ‘CISA Story of International Humanitarian’, aims to raise funds to provide support for those who suffered the terrible effects of Super Typhoon Haiyan, which devastated thousands of homes and lives in the Philippines and Vietnam earlier this month. The Australian Red Cross is the collection agency for donations.
English Australia is aware that several colleges have initiated their own fundraising efforts but we encourage all to give generously to this worthwhile cause, supporting the families and friends of many of our international students.
Staff and students can be encouraged to go to typhoonhaiyan.everydayhero.com/au/council-of-international-students-australia-cisa to make a donation. Their contribution will be greatly appreciated. Colleges can also funnel their collaborative fund-raising efforts through this portal so that CISA can consolidate and recognise the industry-wide response.
Colleges can also contact Nicamil Sanchez, the Project Coordinator at nksanc001@myacu.edu.au if they wish to organise a fundraising booth on campus (especially for those who wish to collect non-monetary donations).
By next year's CISA Conference, CISA hope to announce the student associations and institutions which contributed significantly to this fundraising, and the Consul General from the Philippines will also be invited to the Conference to acknowledge the effort and contribution the international student community, together with the sector, has made to the victims.
